Júlio de Matos has been linked to the teaching of photography for many years. In 1980/81, he was Graduate Assistant at RIT in the History of Aesthetics of Photography, with responsibility for some classes. Following his return to Portugal, he founded the Advanced Course in Photography for the Árvore - Advanced Arts Training Cooperative, Porto, in 1982, and was its director and teacher until 1986. From 1986 to 2003 he taught photography at Citex. From 2001 to 2004 he taught Photography Project at ESAP.

Has orientated internships, organized various courses and workshops, and participated in lectures, specifically in ISAPM in Funchal, Madeira, in Árvore (Porto), Encontros de Fotografia (Coimbra), at the António de Almeida Foundation (Porto), the CPF - Portuguese Photography Centre (Porto), at ESAP, the Porto Higher Arts School, at the “Fonte de Letras” Bookstore (Montemor-o-Velho), and at CLIP (Porto).

Member of various Photographic Juries, namely: in 2006, “Prémio Nacional de Fotografia” – Portuguese National Photography Award, in 2005 and 2006 Sonae Award “Arts and Company”, and in 1988 Kodak’s Photography Award (Portugal).

Has commissioned exhibitions and installations, namely:
2002 - Retratos de Rua, with Bruno Anedda, João Pádua Rola, Nuno Maia, Paulo Oliveira, Pedro Tavares, Salomé, Sandra Carneiro, Sara Coelho e Susana Neves – Foundation of Science and Development, Porto, Portugal
2002 - Visões do Alqueva, with Carmo da Rosa and José Manuel Rodrigues, supported by CPF/MC Portuguese Photography Center – Pavilhão Alqueva, Beja, Portugal
1983 - Untitled, USA, 1980, with Gary D. Hadlock, Jamey Stillings, Júlio de Matos, Kenneth E. Nelson, Marilyn Bridges, Nelson Vigneault, Richard Gray, Yvonne Klocek, … ; supported by RIT and F. Pernes

Photographs extensively across Portugal, and across Asia: China (Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Macau, Xinjiang and Tibet), India (Sikkin, Rajastan, Goa, Gujarat, Karala, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Dehli, Maharashtra, Pondiecherry, West Bengal, Madya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh), Sri Lanka, Nepal, Thailand, Burma, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Recently, the CPA – Chinese Photographers Association invited him to photograph the Xinjiang Autonomous Region.
